Plan B Handmade Burgers, Boerewors & Braai is a South African restaurant located in the Kingsway neighborhood of Etobicoke at 2943 Bloor Street West, Toronto. It is a 5-minute walk from the TTC subway station Royal York. Plan B opens from 12 noon to 9 pm on Tuesday and Thursday, 12 noon to 10 pm on Friday and Saturday, and 12 noon to 8 pm on Sundays.

I went to Plan B with my daughters P and G for lunch. While the selection on their menu, had a lot of visually appealing choices, I had already made up my mind before going to Plan B that I would have Boerewors as one of my main dishes. Boerewors is an Afrikaans name that means farmer sausage and is made from coarse ground beef (usually mixed with minced pork, lamb, or both) and spices (coriander seed, black pepper, nutmeg, and cloves), as described by https://afrifoodnetwork.com/recipes/snack-recipes/boerewors/. The taste of Boerewors is very similar to  Bratwurst, a very common sausage in Germany and Netherlands.

My daughter P who had been to Plan B before was gushing about their mixed Braai and burger, so we ordered a shared platter of a mixed braai – boerewors, chicken, and lamb. We also ordered pap (corn meal to accompany our mixed Braai. We also ordered their tomato soup and the baked beans salad. The slightly charred chicken, boerewors, and lamb mixed Braai garnished with mint leaves was visually appealing. When I dug into our mixed Braai, the pap, tomato soup, and baked beans salad, this combo awakened my tastebuds. I was delighted with this fantastic taste of Africa. The smoked barbeque and spicy taste of the meat combo filled my tastebuds with nostalgia and joyous moments. My daughter P who shared a platter with me was also awed by this soft, well seasoned, and perfectly cooked combo, as she would describe it, emphasizing the distinct and unique taste of the boerewors. The side dishes of tomato soup and bean salad tasted good as well. The bean salad had the right amount of mayo and onions, reminding me of the perfect mayo bean salad I enjoyed growing up in Zimbabwe. The tomato soup was also semi-sweet and had a tinge of spiciness that appealed to both our senses. The food we ordered was so delicious that we ordered another side of pap. Refer to the pictures below for our delectable meal at Plan B.

My daughter G ordered a South African Style burger and chips (fries). This freshly made burger was stuffed with beef bacon, cheese, lettuce, and tomato. G describes the burger as being nicely spiced, smoky, and juicy.  The fries were crispy on the outside yet soft on the inside , refer to pictures below for the yummy food G had at Plan B.

The whole meal for the three of us cost below $80. However, it is best to consult the above-mentioned menu for the current Plan B prices. The customer Service was also excellent as we not only got served great-tasting food, but they did it very promptly.

If you want your tastebuds to experience the unique and flavorsome taste of South Africa, Plan B will not let you down. If you cannot sit in, you can order takeout, uber eats, or even use their catering service for your next event. To name a few of the many delicious choices you can try out, and that I also would like to try out in the future, are the Boerewors Poutine, Chakalaka, Gourmet Halloumi salad with chicken, and Boerewors roll.
